Man With a Plan

I now happily have Windows 7 installed and set up. I’m going to be picking up the progress on Memorize Me v2. I plan to have that released on Friday, the 6th (Friday the 13th is just over a week away for those keeping tabs on that).

After the release of Memorize Me v2, I will begin work on my next project. I currently have 3 projects in the design phase. One is a game and the other 2 are non-game projects. I’m pretty sure that the game one will be next up, but I’m not positive yet.

All 3 projects are just in the design phase, so there is much work to be done regardless of which one I choose. I’m not revealing what kind of ideas I’m toying with just yet, but they all have code names so that I can refer to them both in my mind and here on the site before any names or even specific concepts are nailed down.

Windows 7: T-minus 5 days

The general release of Windows 7 is now a mere 5 days away. This is the first Microsoft operating system that I have actively looked forward to! I’m not even entirely sure why I’m looking forward to it so much. I have downloaded and used the Release Candidate some. And I do like the improvements that have been made. So I have only positive thoughts to share about it. I haven’t even ordered my copy yet. I’m waiting for the family pack to go on sale before I place my order. As soon as Amazon or Newegg has the family pack upgrade available, I’ll be jumping on that.

I’ve noted what programs I use on a regular basis for the past couple of weeks and have made a text file that contains all the names of the programs that I need to download promptly in my Windows 7 install. Although I’ll be going from Vista to Windows 7, I’ll be doing a clean install. So there will be a format and fresh install for me.

I plan on backing up all of my data to DVD-RW discs and then pulling them back from those into Windows 7. That backing up process will start either Saturday (later today) or Sunday (tomorrow). And I will be re-opening all of those discs to make sure that the data seems to have made it to the dvd successfully. In one incident a few years ago, I actually lost data doing a back-up to cd-rw’s when one of about 5 discs that I used to back up apparently didn’t burn properly. That was quite a sad moment and I have absolutely no interest in reliving that incident!!

At this point, I’m not sure if Memorize Me V2 will be finished pre- or post- Windows 7 upgrade. If I find myself with a free day, I will work on it before then, but if not, it may well be delayed until after the Win7 upgrade and settling process.

What I’ve Been Working On

It’s been a little while since my last update but it has been anything but down time.

I’ve done a some testing to make sure Memorize Me is able to run on systems other than the one it was created on. Windows Vista and 7 are confirmed and while I don’t definitively know about other platforms, I have no reason to believe it won’t work on any platform Python and Pyglet are available for. If you happen to have had some problem with it running, please do leave me a comment or drop me an email to let me know. I’d love to try to troubleshoot the problem.

While I’ve been “away”, I’ve been working on a rewrite of Memorize Me as well as making it a more full featured game during the rewrite. Adding a couple of modes and giving “something to show” for having completed a game.

I’ve also started writing some code as part of a group that formed on a game development forum that I frequent (GameDev.net). We’ve been laying the groundwork and working around each other’s schedules to see if we can design and develop some games together. If our schedules are conducive to each other, I’m sure I’ll be posting more about what we’re working on in the future.
